It's also the truth when you are reffing. Somebody is watching you. Consider:
- I had a JV game. It turns out that one of the Assignors I work with has a daughter on one of the JV teams. The Assignor was in the crowd and I didn't see her (I was on the spectator's side of the field)!
- I always see Assignors walking around multiple field layouts. Just watching and observing.
- My daughter's Girl Scout leader has a daughter on a U-14 team, who's game I worked this past weekend. I read the daughter's name during check-in, but didn't associate her to the GS leader. Guess who was at the game! LOL she thought I did a good job.
There is no way the CR or AR would have known that I am a USSF ref that could observe and report on their performance in ways that coaches and other parents could not. If I knew this club's Assignor, I certainly would have reported on the AR texting during the game and the CR's non-compliant uniform.
So do the simple things correct! Wear the proper uniform. Take your job seriously. Hustle! Do your best. Because someone is watching you.
I agree!! There is always someone watching. I am a Grade 7 Referee, Instructor, Assignor and Referee Association President and two of my boys are also Referees. Sometimes the family gets split up because both boys also play competitive soccer on different teams, so we often find ourselves taking 1 to Austin, while the other takes one to Houston, for example. I know many of the out of town Referees, as I travel quite a bit to Referee, but they don't always know my wife!! Believe me, I hear about anything and everything that the Referees did or did not do, and being around Referees for so many years, my wife knows what she is talking about, most of the time. If it is a serious breach, like the texting, then I definitely get with their Assignor, but if it is a minor issue and I see it myself, I often have a quick word after the game offering some informal assessment, but also some encouragement. You never know who is watching, there could be an MLS National Referee in the crowd, like one of my games!!!
ReplyDeleteWow I hope you found out about the MLS Ref (Grade 3 or 4?) after your game was over (assuming you were CR in that game)!
