Few musings from the summer:
- The ECNL Championships were held July 14-16 out here. For the teams that were here, yes, you brought the humidity from your home state to Colorado. Fortunately, the biggest monsoon we've had out here for quite some time decided to relax a bit during this tournament. I only managed to get one game due to family commitments, and mine was called just 10 min into the 2nd half due to lightening. I think the girls (it was U-17) were tired or affected by the altitude because the play was nothing special. Well except for the one team's GK who could punt the ball just about to the opposite attacking third. Tired out the CR for sure.
- I was watching the woman's WC Final when Japan fouled deep into Extra Time and started screaming "That's a DOGSO! That's a DOGSO!" The ref agreed with me of course and issued a send off. The people I was with looked at me as if I was in serious need of medical care. Oops. :)
- As far as the 'controversy' in the US - Brazil game:
- I thought Brazil was correctly awarded a PK. The US defender grabbed and pulled Marta's shirt, which gets a foul call every time. Since she was the last defender outside of the GK and Marta was clearly heading towards goal, it was a DOGSO-F and the send off was correct.
- I disagreed with the CR's initial infringement call on said PK. It didn't seem to me the US player actually entered the Penalty Area.
- The non offside call on Brazil (when they scored in Extra Time) was correct, despite what Julie Foudy thought. The key to the play was the defender in the Penalty Area. That defender kept the Brazilian player onside.
- I was surprised that the AR never raised her flag when the Brazilian GK so grossly violated Law 14 during the Kicks from the Mark (1st one that she saved). Maybe the CR already had the necessary information?
